I’ve had a few people ask me what the whole collection thing is about. This February I posted my first collection’s casting. In a nutshell, instead of releasing one TF shoot at a time, I decided to do a series of shoots and release a bi-monthly collection (and I’ll tell you right now, it was the best decision I ever made).
It happened because I was unhappy with the way I was doing things in the 2011. TF shoots weren’t worth my while anymore, but I was doing them anyway. I was filling my portfolio with random ideas & I felt a little bit lost & directionless, to be honest. I think I just really needed a different way of doing things.
When I was making plans for 2012 I realized that all of my ideas fell into 5 groups. dark stuff, vintage stuff, romantic stuff, edgy stuff & provocative stuff. That’s where the collections idea was born.
Feb/Mar 2012: The Dark Collection
Apr/May 2012: The Vintage Collection
Jun/Jul 2012: The Romantic Collection
Sep/Oct 2012: The Edgy Collection
Nov/Dec 2012: The Provocative Collection
Sounds fancy doesn’t it? So far it’s been really great :) I’m setting deadlines for things & planning ahead. I’m trying to be really disciplinary with myself. The casting for February/March got an awesome amount of feedback & it wasn’t long before I had over 100 emails, messages and comments from people willing to work on the first collection with me.
Long story short, it seems like the thing to do (it’s working for me, anyway!). I strongly recommend it. Regardless of your medium. Sit down and figure out what results you would be satisfied with by the end of the year and make a plan. Set your deadlines and actually follow through with them. Especially if you’re in a tough spot. Sometimes all you need is a little creative-process-revamp.
Goals are dreams with deadlines. :)
Behind the Scenes of my “Lacquer” shoot :)
I’ve been keeping myself super busy, Did 3 shoots this week and now I’m editing tonight.
This was probably one of the messier shoots I’ve done (and there have been plenty!) I’ve been known to cover pretty faces in honey & sugar, put tarantulas on heads and drape snakes around arms…you know, the usual. This time my lovely makeup artist Candice Johnson & I drenched our models in, well, molasses.
To be honest, it wasn’t nearly as sticky as I feared it would be. Cleanup was fairly easy. Molasses can also double as a deep conditioning hair treatment for us brunettes, so maybe I’ll experiment with the leftovers :)
I’m editing now, and this is one of the first times I’ve had the photos turn out completely different from my original “vision”. Not a bad thing though! I’m happy, just didn’t expect to be doing this style of editing.
Photos will be ready soon, and they’ll be released along with the rest of my “February/March: Dark Collection” within the next few weeks (which I am soo very excited for). Keep updated here, in the meantime: http://www.facebook.com/lanayaflavellephotography
Hello Tumblr world! I’m alive, and have returned from my 4 months of post-less tumblring. I’m going to start using this much more now, posting lots of behind the scenes stuff, new photos, videos, inspiration, secrets and maybe the occasional rant about things that don’t make sense.
Here’s what you’ve missed while I was away. Better things coming :)

I just finished editing this set and am very happy with it! :)
We did the shoot on Saturday, and took a short (gorgeous) drive to our Pitt Meadows location. The wind was so great, it really helped out with the end results.
Anyways, this has been my first shoot of the fall! Saying goodbye to harsh outdoor sunshine, and hello to glorious, flattering overcast skies doesn’t seem that bad when you’re behind a lens.
*tip: when you’re taking portraits outside, you want to be in outcast weather. The sky is your softbox, and a perfect one at that! Everything looks much more vibrant in dreary weather (it gives you something to do on rainy days too, right?). Forget about sunlight unless you wanna drama up your lighting & play with harsh shadows.
Aside from this shoot, I have a handful of other autumn projects in the planning stages. I’m not going to spill all the details just yet, but expect to see something more bold, controversial, indulgent.. (and maybe halloween-inspired too). That is all.
…These photos make me wanna cozy up with some chai and listen to Cat Power.

This set was taken at Third Beach in Stanley Park. Once again, Candice did a fabulous job on makeup (she does every time!). It was an absolutely gorgeous day, so playing with the light was fun, and the beach wasn’t too busy either.
Dana wrestled with her high heels sinking into wet sand and contorted into crazy poses while wearing a corset. Somehow she managed to make it look effortless.
I always have fun editing too. The colours and serene beach background play a huge part in this set.
Anyways, we killed it! Go team.
